Fishy Art

Just wondering if the members would be interested in knowing that in among the landscape paintings I will have a couple of fishy linocut prints available to buy during Dorset Art Weeks which runs from 26th May – 10th June. They are original, signed, monochrome linocut prints, in an edition of 100, and cost £80 unframed and £120 framed. www.merrilyharpur.co.uk

Obviously I would love to meet any DFC members who would care to visit me and my pictures during DAW… ?

All best
Merrily

Presentation Night

Dorchester Fishing Club celebrated it’s 140th anniversary in 2017 and a dinner was organised by committee member Rob Ayles. To coincide with this, a raffle was held and the proceeds from this went to Fishing 4 Schools. The prizes were procured by River Keeper John Aplin using various means and huge thanks are due to the donors of the excellent contributions. Charles Jardine was the guest of honour and after dinner speaker.

The raffle and auction of one of Charles’s superb pictures raised the princely sum of £1877 and a cheque was presented to Charles at the January meeting of the Dorset Chalkstream Club in West Stafford close to the Club’s fishing on the River Frome.

140th AGM & Anniversary Dinner

The 140th AGM was held on Saturday 9th December in the Wessex Hotel, Dorchester. After sixteen years of looking after the Club’s funds, Jim Chalmers retired as the Honorary Treasurer. The Chairman thanked him for his sterling work over the past years. Jim was also elected as an Honorary Member in recognition for his service to the Club and Ian Rodd was voted on as the new Honorary Treasurer.

Bryan Sennett thanks Jim Chalmers

After the formal AGM was completed we enjoyed an illustrated guide through the year by John Aplin.

Then there was a break in proceedings, to allow the tables to be set for the 140th Anniversary Dinner. We were then joined by honoured guests, along with our special guest for the night, Charles Jardine, who gave an entertaining look at fly fishing. He also outlined the importance of the charity that he founded, Fishing for Schools. It offers young people the opportunity to discover the joy of fishing, whilst learning new skills in a fun and proactive way.

During the evening Rob Ayles was busily selling raffle tickets for a collection of amazing prizes that John Aplin had gathered from his many fishy contacts. The raffle and Members donations raised an astonishing £1,877.00 and was donated to Fishing for Schools.

Big thanks to all those involved in organising the night, especially Rob Ayles, John Aplin, Bryan Sennett who did an amazing job in putting the whole nights celebrations together and all the raffle prize donators for their generosity. See you all in ten years…

We even get a mention on the Countryside Alliance website www.countryside-alliance.org/angling-clubs-provide-christmas-bonus-fishing-schools/

Big Fish Sightings & Work Party Dates

Firstly as autumn approaches our beloved Frome Valley I have seen a rather encouraging number of three pound plus brown trout on the fin over the last few days while working on both the upper and lower water… These fish are not for the faint hearted and may well require some serious stalking and a huge amount of fly changes before taking….. Good luck!!

Secondly the lovely dedicated guys from the river lab at East Stoke are out tagging the salmon parr on various parts of the Frome over the next week or so, please feel free to stop and have a natter to them about their great work… www.gwct.org.uk/fishing/research/salmon/

The Club is 140 Years Old

This year we will be celebrating our 140th birthday, the same age as The All England Club Wimbledon Tennis Championship!

This year’s AGM will be followed by an informal dinner topped off with an after dinner speaker, the one and only Mr Charles Jardine, the makings of a most memorable evening I am sure.

We will be organising a raffle for the evening and hope to attract some great prizes, the funds raised will be donated to – Countryside Alliance Organisation Fishing for Schools a fantastic charity that Charles began with the Countryside Alliance Foundation back in 2008.

Your donation of any prizes for this raffle will be very much appreciated, please contact John Aplin 07889 680464 or john@riverworks.co.uk to arrange drop off or collection. I will list the prizes as they come in.

Raffle tickets will be on sale prior to the AGM, also on the big day so please give them a push to family and friends.

The AGM / Dinner will be held on Saturday the 9th of December 2017 (date to be entered in your diaries immediately) at the Wessex Royale Hotel, Dorchester – full AGM details and menu will follow shortly.

Flyfishing & Flytying – April

We are in this months edition of Flyfishing & Flytying, a wonderful article on the history of our Club, written by Dominic Garnett.

Dorchester Fishing Club

We spent a very chilly but enjoyable day in January with Dominic. We talked about the history of the Club and how we collaborate with other organisations to improve our fishery, for both flora & fauna. Click to read more on the Club’s History

It is also the Club’s 140th anniversary this year and I do hear rumour of a few plans to celebrate it – more to follow……..

Joseph Tallents – ‘Joe’ – 1938 – 2016

Sadly today we said goodbye to Joe, who died on the 15th September. He was a Member of the Club since 1988 and in 2010 he was made an Honorary Member for his long service with the Club

logoblueFor those who didn’t know Joe, he was the guy that travelled around the river on a moped with his rod strapped to the back! In 2003 he also designed our brilliant logo of a brown trout leaping through a crown of water (reference to the Dutchy Water).

Away from fishing he was an engineer, photographer, artist, gardener, Husband, Dad & Grandfather. I for one will miss Joe’s dry sense of humour and his wish for ever bigger fish!!
