Latest Posts Under: Mayfly

I fished the lower and middle waters yesterday and today I fished the Poundbury stretch up to the bypass. Yesterday I saw very few mayflies hatching but this was probably a result of the grey cool weather. However, the trout were in their feeding positions and ready for the mayflies to appear. Speculative casting into …

Mayfly – Upper Water

Hi John Just wanted to report a cracking afternoon on Monday. I spent a few hours fishing the upper water with my father, who’s relatively new to the fly fishing game. After a drizzly first half, we spotted a good rise to Mayflies just upstream of the railway bridge, in a secluded pool; the fish …

Fantastic fishing

Ladies and Gentlemen I have just had the best evenings fishing ever on the Frome, all fish were taken on a dry Mayfly, the fish were desperate for it, I fished about 100m of the river and returned about twenty fish to well over a pound and all on my little one weight!!!

What a Night!

Take a good look at the photograph taken this evening – yes those are spinners in the air… River still coloured, but clear enough for the trout to see the fly – what a night! Mayfly Spinners

River Wrackle

John, Despite the rain and the quite coloured water I went fishing this morning to the Wrackle and the upper stretch of the main river. Hardly any fish were rising but I persevered in the clearer water of the Wrackle casting a size 16 Greenwell into likely spots. This was rewarded with a nice looking …

Mayfly?

At last some cooler weather for a fish… Arrived on the Upper Water to be greeted by the appearance of this yellow may dun, closely followed by three mayfly!! That is all I saw, but I would recommend that you start carrying a few mayfly patterns – just in case! Yellow May Dun The wind …

There were quite a few Grannom fluttering above the river and dipping the water surface which I assume to be egg laying. Very few trout were rising and …

Early Morning

I managed to get on the river at 6.30 Saturday morning fishing below Whitfield hatches about 300 yds downstream of the railway bridge. There was plenty of everything hatching including mayfly, though not in huge numbers. I was pleased to land a 16 “ fish on a Greenwells Glory( probably the same fish from my …

Spinners

Had a nice session on Thursday evening, but the blizzard of Spinners was ignored in favour of a small Greenwell’s. I had ten fish, the largest was 16 “, and a couple of nice Grayling too, all returned – and I even saw an Otter (for about two seconds!). All the very best and good …

Will’s Day

Duffer in Paradise A beautiful sunny day was promised with just the lightest of breeze from the north-west. I made a leisurely start on the Upper Water at 9am, but despite plenty of insect life and quite a few Mayflies, there was not a sign of a rise anywhere for a couple of hours. Canon …
