Helping to improve the habitat of the River's Frome, Cerne & Piddle

The Club has been caring  for the River Frome since 1877 and in recent years has embarked on some major improvement work:-

1898 The Club started proceedings to stop the raw sewage of Dorchester being pumped straight into the river. The Club created a separate fund called ‘River Improvement Fund’ to be kept to pay for improvement works once the sewage is diverted.

1908 Further pollution problems and water samples sent to an analyst who found that the water was highly contaminated and not good for fish or cattle. The battle with the water board continued until the sewage farm was built in 1959.

1961 A case occurred during the season of litter being left near the river bank on the Lower Water ( eggshells, paper bags and squash bottles). The Committee assume that no member of the Club will be responsible for such behaviour.

1972 The result of the Public Enquiry for the abstraction of water from the Sydling Brook was made known in September. The Minister refused the abstraction so that the water supply is maintained unaltered.

1998 Fencing the river from cattle poaching was started this year and now the majority of the Club’s water is fenced.

1999 Groynes installed at Blue Bridge to correct the effects of dredging the River in the 60’s.

2003 Otter Holt built on the Upper Water in conjunction with the Dorset Wildlife Trust.

2006 Lower Water Improvements completed

2007 Flow deflectors & willow mattresses’ installed
