Sweet Returns

Today I was showing a previous member around the lower water (he was a member over ten years ago), shortly after 10.00am in bright spring sunshine and a fresh downstream wind the Grannom were literally pouring off, and the fish were seriously on to them…. Typically not an angler in sight! Great excitement, could the …

2013 Season

Thanks to John Aplin for a splendid morning, just a chilled bunch talking about fishing and its not everyday you get chance to cast with a Tom Moran split cane rod!! Then off to the Club’s water for a fish, the sun was out and so is the grannom, with plenty of rising trout & …

Mixed Fortunes

Another little spell on the river today, and plenty of Grannom again, but risers were distinctly difficult to find – or was that because I followed several other members upstream! A little group of three would have nothing to do with me, despite offering them a varied menu, and eventually the antics of an agitated …

Dandelions looked nice

The pleasant early sunshine tempted me to have a first early-season look at the River today.  There was enough Grannom to excite a few fish, and although risers were well spread out, they were quite co-operative.  I ended an hour or so with a tally of three reasonable trout.  Lovely to be back on the river again, and …

First day on DFC water

Had a great first day for the trout fishing on the DFC waters. Lots of rising fish to the Grannom with 9 to hand all on dries and several pricked. I managed one large Salmon smolt and I think the faster riffles were full of them so good news for the future. The fish in …

April 1st

The amazing weather continues and still no sign of any meaningful rain…. But perfect for the first trip of the season…. Arrived around 10am and there was fly already in the air and small trout rising in the margins. It wasn’t long before a 10″ brown sucked in the GRHE as it floated downstream. This …

Hawthorn fly

Just completed a great two days fishing with my good friend on the Clubs water. Where we encountered huge hatches of grannom but hardly any fish rising, then lots of fish rising to unseen fly! New fly patterns successfully tried, but too many flies lost to the trees! Lovely warm weather and amazing hatches of …

A day of Twos

I should have been working of course but the lure of my first trip of the season to the Frome was too strong -and “an urgent meeting in Dorchester” was handily inked in the diary . The result – two nice trout came blind to a small elk hair sedge, I saw two house Martins …

Fit and feisty

Just returned from a lovely couple of hours on the Club’s Water, never seen such a strong Grannom hatch – and plenty of rising fish taking them! I managed to bring two really nice trout to the net before having to leave. Both fish very fit and feisty! Best wishes for the season

April 1st

After years of fishing the River Frome I am still very much learning it’s rhythm and when is the optimum time to fish. April 1st arrived to a very wet,  misty and windy morning, this was after weeks of amazingly calm warm weather. So not the best weather to dash out in the hope of …
