April 1st 2026

Yesterday was glorious, with temps up to 17c – April 1st arrived with a chilly wind blowing down the valley, but the sight of a hatching olive and few grannom in the air lifted my spirits.

I was fishing one of our Piddle beats and it wasn’t long before my nymph was taken – my 2026 season had started. I fished until the wind blew me off the river and I needed a coffee to warm up.

I didn’t see a single rise, even through a trickle of olives were coming off and all my fish were caught on a small hares ear gold head. I chatted with Rob, who fished above me and he too was beaten by the chilly wind.

The rivers are looking good after all the winters rain, we just need it to warm up!

If you fished today, please let me know how you fared 🙂 john@grhe.co.uk
